Sala Keo Kou, (Thewalai Garden)
Sala Keo Kou (Thewalai Garden), also known as Wat Khaek by the locals, is a sanctuary affiliated with the meditation center Kaeo Ku. Spanning an area of 42 rai (about 16.5 acres), it was constructed by Phra Boonleua Suriyanthano in the year 2521 B.E. (1978) under the principle of “all religions can coexist.” The park serves as a representation of a realm liberated from all worldly suffering. Inside the park, there are over 200 large concrete and reinforced steel sculptures, symbolizing the unity of sacred elements from various religions. Than Thip Waterfall
A beautiful waterfall in the midst of a lush and abundant forest, Than Thip Waterfall originates from the highest peak in Nong Khai, known as “Phu Ya Ao.” The waterfall consists of three tiers, each cascading down the rocky cliffs with a height of up to 875 meters. Nong Khai Aquarium
The Nong Khai Aquarium, or the Sirindhorn Freshwater Aquarium, is located at Khon Kaen University’s Nong Khai Campus. Wat Tham Si Mongkhon
In close proximity to “Wat Pha Tak Suea,” there is a prominent temple known for its beliefs related to Naga, called Wat Tham Sri Mongkhon or commonly referred to as Tham Din Plew. Due to its interior characteristics, including moisture, continuous water flow throughout the year, and beautiful cave formations, the temple is well-recognized. Inside the cave, there are gracefully curved passages, and some stones are deliberately placed, resembling an intentional arrangement. Phra That Bang Phuan
Phra That Bang Phuan, situated on an area of over 102 acres, stands out with the stupa of Phra That Bang Phuan, a square-shaped stupa constructed from laterite and fired clay bricks. Inside, it houses a relic of Lord Buddha. The temple premises contain numerous ancient artifacts, including a large Buddha statue, a sacred Naga pond, a memorial pillar, three pagodas, and seven small chedis, collectively known as “Satatmaha Sathan,” built in accordance with Buddhist principles. Phra That La Nong
Phra That La Nong, or the Submerged Pagoda, is a sacred pagoda that has been submerged under water for over 170 years. Located in Nong Khai, this pagoda is also known as the Pagoda in the Middle of the River and is considered the spiritual symbol of the town. In its interior, it enshrines nine ancient relics of Lord Buddha. Originally situated on the bank of the Mekong River within the Wat Phra That Nong Khai area, the pagoda faced damage when the river eroded its foundation, causing it to collapse in 2390 B.E. Naga rocket viewing point, Wat Thai
Ending with a popular spot for observing the fireballs of Naga every year, known as “Wat Thai” or more commonly recognized as “Tham Phaya Nak.” This site features the prominent nine-headed Naga statue, a grand, thousand-eyed deity, and a replica of the “Badan (Bat) Cave” constructed in 2550 B.E. In the temple area, a black Naga, believed to be the gatekeeper of the Dalal City entrance, stands 19 meters tall. It is widely believed that the dwelling place of the Naga is in the vicinity of the Mekong River in front of this Thai temple. The fireball festival is celebrated annually on the fifteenth day of the eleventh lunar month, around the end of October to early November. This grand festival along the Mekong Riverbank occurs only once a year. The phenomenon has gained international acclaim, with colorful fireballs rising from beneath the bat cave to the sky. Moreover, during the festival, the riverside is filled with numerous stalls and shops, making it the most suitable time for a visit to Nong Khai. It’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else for sure.
